Understand your diagnosis: what is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a medical condition that involves the overdevelopment or enlargement of breasts in males. It affects between 40 and 60 percent of men each year in the US. It can happen to men at any age and is directly related to a change in hormones, weight gain, or certain prescription medications. This condition is hereditary and can cause decreased self-esteem and continual emotional damage. The good news? Gynecomastia surgery can work to reverse this condition.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Excess fat in the chest area, specifically breast tissue
  • Increased amount of breast skin
  • Excess glandular tissue
  • Presence of one or both breasts

Advanced treatment to meet your body goals.

Gynecomastia surgery is often referred to as a “male breast reduction” or “male reduction mammaplasty” and is an outpatient procedure that takes 1 to.3 hours to perform. Depending on the root cause of the condition, varying treatment options are available for surgery.

If the enlarged breasts are caused by glandular tissue, surgical removal of the excess tissue is performed. Excision is necessary to reduce and reposition the areola and nipple. Incisions will be used with specific placement depending on the condition and preference of the patient and the cosmetic team.

If the increased size is due to excess fatty tissue, liposuction is the primary surgical technique used for the reduction. A thin tube will be placed under the skin through small incisions to remove excess fat cells, creating a more defined and toned look on the chest.

In both instances, general anesthesia is required. In some cases, gynecomastia is caused by glandular and fatty tissues requiring the surgical team to utilize excision and liposuction for the best long-term aesthetic and health results.

Surgical results post-surgery are immediate. Over the course of 3 to 6 months, full results will appear after swelling, inflammation and bruising subside.
